SNAP Playground Receives Prestigious Award – 2011 Best of Aquatics

Hartselle, Alabama - The “John Mark Stallings Special Needs Accessible Playground (SNAP) of Morgan County" Splash Pad has been recognized by Aquatics International magazine as a “Best of Aquatics” facility for 2011.

This nationwide competition celebrates the industry’s outstanding aquatics facilities of all varieties — including government, nonprofit and privately owned operations. Entries are judged on programming, promotional materials, aquatic amenities and community involvement. A panel of distinguished aquatics professionals independently chose SNAP as the best in class over all other spraypark facilities that entered the contest. Judge`s comment: “This project is an inspiration. Designing for universal accessibility requires foresight and careful planning. Kudos to the development team.”

Receiving this Best of Aquatics recognition demonstrates that the SNAP Splash Pad represents the industry's finest - a benchmark for other similar facilities. SNAP was recognized in a special supplement to the November/December 2011 issue of Aquatics International magazine. (Note: The article is attached.)

Aquatics International, owned by Hanley Wood, is the leading business-to-business media company serving the pool and spa, housing, and construction industries. Founded in 1976, Hanley Wood has more than 500 employees and is made up of five units, including a magazine division that publishes 22 trade magazines and an exhibition division for trade shows. Hanley Wood is owned by J.P. Morgan Partners, LLC, a private equity affiliate of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.

SNAP is dedicated in memory of John Mark Stallings whose 46-year life was challenged by Down Syndrome. His life exemplifies that remarkable accomplishments are possible by those with disabilities when included in society.

There are more than 1,700 physically challenged children in Morgan County, and SNAP provides a regional premier special needs accessible and usable playground for their enjoyment. The playground is strategically located in central Morgan County in Hartselle`s Sparkman Park, near the Hartselle civic center. Sparkman Park hosts numerous other adjacent indoor/outdoor activities for children and adults and provides an ambient environment which is safe and conducive to merriment.

SNAP`s unique design, accommodations and central location make it a “destination attraction,” encouraging all children, with or without special needs, to come and play. Positive interaction between special needs children and those who are not physically challenged helps to minimize self-consciousness, build self-esteem and generally enhance the lives of special needs children and their families. It is emphasized that the entire SNAP complex is special needs accessible and usable and in total compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

SNAP is a three-phase project administered entirely by volunteers and funded by charity and grants. The project was initiated in December 2006 and is being constructed in phases as funds become available, permitting early incremental use. The Phase 1 Swing Area was completed in May 2008 at a cost of $32,794. The award-winning Phase 2 Splash Pad was completed in July 2010 at a cost of $239,224. The third and final phase is being completed in increments. A covered pavilion with picnic benches and ceiling fans was completed in June 2011 at a cost of $44,211 and includes special needs restrooms and a bi-level drinking fountain. Estimated to cost $58,000, a prominent entrance structure to the complex is under construction. A rubberized-surface playground with 45 play features, addressing twelve types of play for balanced child development, will complete the complex. Completion of this main playground is dependent on raising the remaining $350,000 required for construction.

The annual Morgan County Alabama Sheriff's Rodeo kicks off on March 29th, 2012 with the "Special Needs Rodeo". This special day allows all City and Morgan County special needs kids a day off from school - they will enjoy fun, food & games, along with hay rides, face painting and, of course, a preview of cowboys & cowgirls roping and riding! Their own special rodeo!

The John Mark Stallings SNAP of Morgan County has supported this special needs rodeo for years and plans to have a booth that day! It is truly a fun day for all Morgan county special needs children.

The John Mark Stallings Special Needs Accessible Playground is entering the third and final phase of construction. Phase three will be built in two increments, first, the entry way under construction now, and lastly, the main playground area projected to be finished by the end of 2012. Morgan County Commission District 2 has prepared the ground for the concrete floors of the entry way to be poured this week, provided that weather is good, SNAP project manager Bob Francis said.

The main entrance will serve as a center for donor recognition, as well as, display a memorial plaque dedicated in memory of John Mark Stallings, Francis said.

The project began simply in 2002 when the Civitan Club of Hartselle decided to purchase special swing sets. In 2006, the four civic clubs of Hartselle - Civitan, Kiwanis, Lions and Rotary -came together with a bigger vision, Francis said.

“When you begin to do something like this, you begin to think we can do more,” he said.

The four clubs united, with several partners and donations throughout Morgan County, and did a lot more.

The SNAP playground is a multiuse playground for children of all abilities, located in Hartselle behind the Sparkman Civic Center. There is a swing area, completed in 2008, with wheelchair accessible swings, and a splash pad area completed in 2010, which is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day each year. An accessible pavilion was complete in June 2011. There is no fee for use of the playground or splash pad.

The completed facility will have 68 total features incorporating “12 types of play for balanced child development” including, auditory/sound, balancing, brachiating, chinning, climbing, gathering/social, imaginative, manipulative, rocking, sliding, spinning and swinging.

The third phase will cost an estimated $263,515 bringing the approximate total of the complete project to $800,000.

“The target [for completing the main playground] was 2012, but it’s probably going to be pushed,” Francis said. “It depends on grants and fundraisers.”

Here's the second load of scrap metal collected by Billy McAbee, raising $110.40 for SNAP. The items came from the fine folks at B & G Tire, Edith Bennich, DeWayne Bennich, and Jay Rushen.

Billy came up with the idea of collecting and selling recyclable metal for SNAP. If you have ideas about ways to keep the donations coming in, please let me know. If needed, we can get several members together and determine how to make it happen.

SCRAP for SNAP

Here's the first load of the new Scrap for SNAP money raising project being conducted by Billy McAbee. Four photos are attached. Billy sold this load today for $110.96. He previously passed out letters of introduction to neighbors and some business owners, explaining that he is collecting and selling recyclable metals, with all money going to SNAP. I signed the letters on paper with the SNAP logo in color, and asked donors to call Billy when they have something for him.

I'll check with Billy to find out how extensive he wants to make the effort, for an email announcement from myself, each of you, and others involved might get a big response in a short time. Perhaps others with trucks and/or trailers will decide to do as Billy is doing. Hopefully, we can all discuss it during next week's meeting, if there's room on the agenda. I've asked Billy to join us, if he is available.

Splash Parties Continue - July 23, 2011

Tuesday of this week included "Christmas in July" at the SNAP Splash Pad. In the photos, Parks and Recreation Department workers Staci Segler and Heather Hemming substituted for Santa in leading the games. Here they are seen attaching shaving cream beards to party-goers. The beards were then "shaved" by use of water pistols at the hand of other participants.

Christmas in July is one of four parties being conducted at the Splash Pad on consecutive Tuesdays, from 2 PM until 4 PM. Last week's party was a Hawaiian Luau. Next week, "Recreation Celebration" will be based on various sports. The first Tuesday in August will see a Mexican Fiesta. As always, events at the Splash Pad are free and open to all members of the public, without reservations.

Lowe`s recently completed an increment of the SNAP complex

perimeter landscaping. Store Manager Lee Rogers approached the SNAP organization last summer, offering to donate a $1200 grant for landscape items and labor to install, as a Lowe`s Heroes project.

Work was completed on November 11, 2011 at a total value of $2,000 for materials and labor. This made possible

of the west increment landscaping for the complex.

NAIFA Presents $3500 Donation to SNAP!

Charlie Gandy, Vice President, NAIFA, presents a $3500 check for the John Mark Stallings Special Needs Accessible Playground of Morgan County (SNAP) to Bob Francis, Project Manager.

The National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) - Tennessee Valley has contributed annually to SNAP since the project began in 2007 & NAIFA has donated a total of $9750 to date. Donations include proceeds from NAIFA sponsored golf benefit tournaments in 2010 and 201 and from the organization's treasury. This $3500 will be used to help construct the main entrance to the playground, scheduled for this fall.

SNAP yard sale nets $5,000 for next phase

The third and final construction phase of the John Mark Stallings Special Needs Accessible Playground at Sparkman Park moved a step closer to reality last weekend thanks to the success of the project’s Mega Yard Sale.

The two-day event, which was staged in a parking lot next to Sparkman Civic Center, raised $5,000 in spite of disruptions caused by storms, according to Jack Templeton, project coordinator.

“We had a large number of people waiting to shop and buy when we started setting up on Thursday afternoon,” Templeton said, “and we stayed busy the entire time. That speaks well for the publicity the project received. We talked to a lot of people from Moulton, Cullman and Decatur.

“One of the problems we had was not enough table space to display all of the merchandise,” he pointed out. “Then we had to cover everything up with plastic when it rained Thursday evening, and boxes of books and clothing sitting on the parking lot were exposed to water and damaged. A thunderstorm late Friday afternoon also disrupted the sale.”

“But overall, I thought we did well,” Templeton said. “I’m extremely proud of all of our volunteers. Members of Hartselle High’s baseball team did a lot of the lifting and heavy work to help us get set up and many of our other volunteers worked straight through for two days without having time to take a break. I don’t recall hearing a complaint from anyone during the whole time.”

“I want to thank everyone who donated items for the yard sale, the volunteers who worked during the sale and those who came to shop and buy,” said SNAP project manager Bob Francis. “The money raised is a big boost and I feel we’re well on our way to having the funds we need to complete the project next year.”

“Some of the people who came to the yard sale went over to take a look at the playground,” he pointed out. “They were awe-stricken and said it was hard for them to imagine something like this being built in Hartselle.

“My observation is when the Hartselle community sees a need, its people will respond.”

SNAP Yard Sale was a Huge Success

We began with approximately 5,000 cubic feet (not square feet) of donated items, and had about 150 cubic feet remaining, so the sale was obviously very successful and its income gets us a small step closer to finishing the playground for the kids. Splash Pad Opens for the Summer!

With most of the finishing touches complete, the Splash Pad and Pavilion opened June 5, 2011. At about 3 PM, the count was 61 people nside the pavilion & 41 outside. All tables & benches were in use. Everybody was having a great time, and making compliments about what a terrific facility we have for all children to use.

Volunteers Needed for SNAP's Mega Rummage Sale on July 15th and 16th

As the John Mark Stallings Special Needs Accessible Playground (SNAP) project begins its third and final phase, a mega rummage sale will be conducted in less than two weeks! This is a wide-spread announcement of the event, seeking hundreds of customers and dozens of volunteers. I hope you'll be able to participate in both capacities by buying treasures for yourself and your loved ones, and remaining with us to help conduct the event. Please help pass the word by forwarding this information to anyone you know and publishing it in any media available.

The highly visible location is at the intersection of U.S. Highway 31 and Nanceford Road, SW, Hartselle. That's the former site of a credit union and bank, next door to the Sparkman Civic Center. That's also where we have two 53' long storage containers filled with a large variety of goods needing new homes. The containers are full, so we ask that anyone still having items to donate bring them on Thursday afternoon or early Friday morning.

The schedule below reflects sale times and periods during which volunteers are needed. The Splash Pad will be open from 8 AM until 8 PM, so children can play while the adults do the shopping!

Thursday, July 14th

3 PM until 6 PM - Session for volunteers only to arrange tables, clean and price items, and stock the tables. 10 people will be needed, but more will be appreciated.

Friday, July 15th

6 AM until 5 PM - Sale hours

Snacks and drinks will be available from late morning until early afternoon

Volunteers will work in shifts from 6 AM - 10 AM (10 people), 10 AM - 2 PM (10 people), and 2 PM - 5 PM (5 people)

Saturday, July 16th

6 AM until 2 PM - Sale hours

2 PM until 3 PM - Closing and Cleaning

Snacks and drinks will be available from late morning until early afternoon

GRAND OPENING OF THE SPLASH PAD AT THE

JOHN MARK STALLINGS SPECIAL NEEDS ACCESSIBLE PLAYGROUND (SNAP) OF MORGAN COUNTY

Hartselle, AL- The Grand Opening of the Splash Pad which is Phase 2 of the John Mark Stallings SNAP of Morgan County playground at 406 Nance Ford Road in Hartselle marked "A Defining Moment" on Saturday, July 24, 2010, toward enrichment of the lives of Morgan County and regional special needs children and their families, as well as all other children.

This was an extensive and inclusive heartfelt moment for the many who have contributed their time, talent and resources toward completion of this magnificently worthy project, with a price tag of $237,000. Bob Francis, Project Manager, personally thanked the faithful volunteers within the SNAP organization for their 3 ½ years of “labor of love.”

Many community and civic leaders, volunteers, individuals, parents, grandparents and children participated in this exciting event. To observe the participating special needs children, who represent 1700 of their peers in Morgan County, confirmed that it has all been worthwhile.

Along the way, since December 19, 2006, there have been many humbling and inspiring moments and experiences: (1) 50 cents donated by a 10-yr old girl from Tullahoma, TN; (2) A $5.00 check drawn from the prisoner`s account from an inmate at Atmore; (3) Major cash donations along with the donor`s request to perform in-kind service; (4) Dedication of SNAP in memory of John Mark Stallings; (5) Decatur Daily staff members “Make a Difference Day” garden, enhancing SNAP in memory of Reece Cosby; (6) Expressed appreciation by donors for allowing them to participate in the project - and so many, many more.

Experiences such as these and the widespread and continual encouragement and support within and outside Morgan County have been the sources of inspiration and energy for SNAP volunteers to “continue the march” toward completion of the entire complex of the John Mark Stallings SNAP of Morgan County, estimated to cost $650,000 not including in-kind services. With Phase 1, the special swing area completed in 2008, and now this Phase 2 splash pad, there remains the Phase 3 main playground, estimated to cost $365,000. This amount must be raised before Phase 3 construction can begin.

Among the many providing continual encouragement, support and inspiration is a man who has dedicated his life to improving the lives of others. He has consistently demonstrated this throughout his life. Three years ago, he wrote a letter to the SNAP organization expressing his advocacy for the SNAP project and pledging his support “to bring this inspiring dream to a reality.” He has honored this commitment through both his personal financial support and his influential support as our State Senator, Arthur Orr, who has enabled the award of significant grants for SNAP.

Susan Hines began the grand opening ceremony with remarks about the sign at the entry of the splash pad which recognizes donors of $1000 or more. Rev. Jerry Smith offered the Invocation. Doug Moss recognized the construction team and Bob Francis introduced the guest speaker, Senator Orr, who spoke words of encouragement to all. On behalf of the SNAP volunteers, all donors and especially the benefiting children of SNAP, Bob Francis presented a plaque to Senator Orr as a visible reminder of sincere appreciation for his encouragement and support. Mayor Dwight Tankersley presented closing remarks and performed the ribbon cutting.

It was a joy to see the children and their siblings, parents and grandparents rushing to the Splash Pad to enjoy the water park on such a beautiful Saturday with the summer weather approaching 100 degrees! Children in wheelchairs spinning about in the water, grandparents, parents and siblings pushing young children in wheelchairs through the water, other children running through the water, and all of them playing together with big smiles on their faces was an awesome sight! Others gathered around to watch and photograph the fun-filled event!

The beauty of this splash pad is that any child can play in the water at each play station regardless of his or her ability - this facility is totally special needs accessible and usable. The facility will be open from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, seven days weekly until mid September, and utilization by all children is encouraged.

The SNAP complex was dedicated in memory of John Mark Stallings in November, 2008 with John Mark's father, Coach Gene Stallings, participating in a compelling ceremony at the site. The remarkable life of John Mark, enhanced through the caring and love of others, serves to epitomize the purpose of SNAP. His life taught us that every life matters and that anyone, no matter how significant in society`s eyes can make a positive impact on others.

John Mark's legacy shall be reminded to all those who pass through the planned, striking entryway to the complex. The entire complex offers opportunities, which were previously limited or nonexistent, to special needs children and their families.The lives of these children are significantly improved through association and participation in activities with other children who have no physical constraints. They gain self-confidence and feel more worthy and useful. Other children more readily accept them as peers. Mutual benefits are gained that endure throughout their lives. They mature mentally and physically to higher levels as a result of a positive, altered mental attitude and enabled physical activity. These benefits permeate throughout the families resulting in mutual reinforcement within the families and serving to inspire those outside the family. The overall result is that special needs children and their families typically live longer than predicted, lead more productive lives and are less encumbered by typical social constraints.

Clara is very excited about SNAP! She is 6 years old & has spinal bifida. Hannah Montana was at her birthday party last month & Clara made a HUGE sacrifice! Snap is a very good idea!!!!! Every kid should have a place to play like the Snap playground. Not only kids with special needs are to play on the playground but kids like me too .
Can you imagine not being able to play with all the other kids? Most parks have small pebbles or mulch on the ground and a wheelchair could not go over it.. Snap will have a rubberized ground. There are still some activities that disabled kids can’t do, like the slides or the stairs, but Snap has lots of other fun things for them to do, like wheelchair swings, tick tack toe boards and water sprinklers!
There are 1,700 kids that have special needs in Morgan County. There are many healthy kids not able to even meet a special needs child. Children like me don’t know how it feels to not be able to play with other kids because of a disability. With Snap all kids have a chance to become friends and learn from each other.
Snap needs us ” Barkley Bridger’s” to help too. We need to earn money to give to Snap to get this park built!!!!! The class that raises the most money could have a pizza and movie party from donations made by pizza places in Hartselle.

Why I Want to Help With the SNAP Playground

What a joy it is to play with my kids at a playground! I love to take them on a pretty sunny day and hear their squeals and laughter. It is one of our favorite family activities and we go quite often. In the past week and a half, we have played at the park 4 times. It’s fun and it’s free!
I can’t imagine not being able to enjoy a park with my kids. How hard it must be for a mother of a handicapped child to maneuver a wheelchair over the small pebbles at most parks. I can remember when my twins were small and the difficulty I had going to places with rugged terrain. I got so tired out pushing their double stroller and getting that heavy thing in and out of the car, that by the time we returned home, I was exhausted. God bless the mothers who will always be faced with the difficulty and challenges of pushing their child in a wheelchair.
When I learned that over 1,700 kids in Morgan County are special needs, I was shocked. That’s almost 3 times the amount of students enrolled at Barkley Bridge. The families of those kids need our help. Our own children will also grow from experiencing friendships with these kids. Oh, the possible life lessons they could learn from simply playing together! I want my children to have the chance to reach out and touch them and to also ‘be touched’ in a very special way. I am willing to help make this dream a reality.

I want to help all kids be able to play on playgrounds because the healthy kids get to play on the playgrounds and the ‘not healthy’ kids don’t, and that’s not fair.
It would be a happy feeling for a child in a wheelchair to swing for the very first time! Their smile would be so big! I would help push them in the swing.
The special needs kids are the same as me, but they have problems so they cannot do things that I can do. That makes them feel bad. When they feel bad, I feel ‘badder‘. I will help them raise money for kids in wheelchairs and on crutches. I will be their friend!
Question: Abbie this is a mighty big job to help with. It’s going to take a very long time and be lots of hard work. Will you just give up if it’s too hard?
We can do it if we ‘keep moving forward’ and keep trying to make the playground work- you don’t quit!
*Please note: “keep moving forward” is a famous Walt Disney quote that Abbie learned about in a movie she saw recently. I thought it may have been beyond her understanding.

If we don’t help the special needs kids, they won’t be able to play on the playground. They would still have to sit and watch all the other kids play. I feel sad that they don’t get to play. They should get to play.
Question: Grace, what if someone said to you, “You can’t do anything to help, you’re just a kid!”- How would you answer them?
I can help! You don’t know what I can do- and if you tried, you might be able to help, too-- but only if you believe in yourself.
Question: Who taught you to believe in yourself?
I learned it at school. Like in PE -at first I couldn’t do any sit-ups, it was too hard. So I tried again and I learned how to do it. I kept trying every day and now I can do 27, and soon I’ll try to do 30.

We need S.N.A.P because some children have special needs. This doesn't mean they should not have the same privileges as other kids. They can't help it that they are special. God made them special for a good reason.

She is a gifted child and has a sister with Autism. She understands and wants her schools and community to have the resources our area should provide. She is writing a paper and working on a video to get a 10,000 grant for her school for extra resource privileges. Please, remember our kids have hearts and need to enjoy everyday they can growing up. What is SNAP Playground?

SNAP is an ancronym for Special Needs Accessible Playground. This is a very exciting project which entails a premiere "destination" playground and splash water park to be located in Hartselle, Alabama centrally located to all Morgan County special needs residents.

This BLOG has been created to be an interactive way to educate & connect people.

If you are a family with a special needs child, we encourage you to join our support group which is just now on the ground floor. Link up with others in the Morgan County to support you!

Fundraising has kicked off for the $600,000+ needed to complete this endeavor and community awareness is quickly growing!
